Two words about thermostat recycling: Compliance & Regulation

It’s a given that when it comes to mercury-switch thermostats, proper handling and shipping is paramount to the continuing success of our program and the safety of your and our staff. In fact it’s our first priority. So it’s very important that all collection points follow our mandated shipping procedures.

Please comply with the following guidance on storage and shipping. We won’t accept anything but mercury thermostats in our bins. Failure to follow TRC collection and shipping procedures could result in your location’s removal from the program.

For Collection Sites

Ship the whole, intact thermostat (collect and ship thermostats with the covers.)

Recycle only wall-mount mercury-switch thermostats. That means no batteries, no fluorescent lights, or any other item containing mercury. Contact your local waste management authority for information on how to dispose of these items.

As soon as the container is full ship it to us. (If you don’t fill the container please note it must be shipped to us once per calendar year for program compliance.)

If you don’t have a second TRC container, use a plastic five-gallon pail with lid to store thermostats until your container is returned. Don’t place warranty items in the recycling container because you won’t receive warranty credit for any devices received in the containers.

DO NOT ACCEPT OR STORE LOOSE MERCURY BULBS, LIQUID (ELEMENTAL) MERCURY, THERMOSTATS LEAKING MERCURY, OR ANY OTHER MERCURY CONTAINING PRODUCT IN A TRC CONTAINER.

Collection Container Shipping

When you get your TRC container you’ll find the following items in the container or in a zip-lock bag attached to the side of the container:

  • One plastic bag liner for lining the collection container.
  • Three wire zip ties to seal the bag liner and bin for shipment
  • One authorized return service (ARS) shipping label.

To ship container:

1. Unfold the plastic bag liner and use it to line the recycling/shipping container.

2. We recommend HVAC wholesale distributors have staff accept thermostats and place them in the container. For retailers and HHW locations this is mandatory.
